POLICIES & PROCEDURES

Employees cannot deliver expected performance and behavior unless they know what is expected. The best companies have an effective process of explaining and reminding employees what is expected of them.

Communicating policies and procedures may take a number of different forms, such as an employee handbook, a policy manual for managers and supervisors, and/or a web page on the company’s internal network.

The key to success in communicating policies and procedures or performance and behavior expectations is to avoid the cat-and-mouse game of being too specific. No one can come up with a comprehensive list of dos and don’ts. Most companies, at one time of another, have been caught up in the game of trying to keep their list of rules current with all of the creative ways employees choose to violate them. The answer is not more detail. The answer is to stick to principles.
